ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS about working from home is that you get to set your own hours.

If you’re driven by goals, for example, then, the ability to set your own hours can mean getting twice as much done as the average employee or business owner. You can get ahead faster, call your own shots. It can give you time with family or to pursue hobbies or whatever.

But working from home can have its drawbacks.  If you’re undisciplined or if you find it hard to work without direction from others, then, you may find working from home more of a challenge than it’s worth.

However, you can have the freedom a work-at-home lifestyle offers without falling for the common trap of getting little done due to distraction.

Here are 3 tips to keep you on the right track:

  1. Discipline doesn’t start when you sit down at your desk. Discipline is a lifetime habit — something you need in every area of your life. If you’re not disciplined at exercise and taking care of your body for example, if you struggle to make time for your family, if you want all the rewards now without putting in the effort, you’re going to struggle to maintain the level of productivity required to succeed as a home based entrepreneur.  You can start being more disciplined by making the simple decision to be at your desk or place of work at a specific time every day — and then stick to your decision.
    .
  2. Create a workspace that works for you. The old adage “a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind” doesn’t work for everybody. Personally, I prefer a clean and clear desk space. I find it helps me think and organize my thoughts better. Only you can decide the best working environment for you. But whatever it is, make sure you set your work space up to work for you and not against you. Try different arrangements ’til you find the one that fuels your creativity and puts you in a peak state of effectiveness for the work you do.
    .
  3. Constantly seek out new sources of inspiration. The mind works better when inspired. If there are magazines or trade journals in your industry that offer intelligent insights into your area of expertise then subscribe and read those magazines. If you get inspiration from being amongst nature, make time to get out doors on a regular basis.  If music inspires you, you could try taking a 5 minute break every 45 minutes or so to listen to your favorite tunes and recharge your creative batteries.

These are just 3 ways to make sure you get more done while working at home. There are many more secrets and lessons for you to discover. But  I find practicing just these three tips makes me more productive and helps me reach my income and lifestyle goals working from home.
